Over the past 11 years, they became known to their legion of fans as the place to go for pizza, party subs and a variety of groceries.

Mitch’s Food Market, 22040 Sibley Road, recently made a surprising departure from its Brownstown Twp. location to a new spot in South Lyon.

Owners posted a farewell message on a popular Downriver social media account on May 7 formally announcing their decision.

The sale was actually a done deal on March 25. According to Zack Kalasho, manager/owner of the market, ownership was taken over back in 2011. Not long after that, Kalasho said their Italian subs became their number one seller and pizza a signature item.

Kalasho, who owned the market with his brother, said one of the reasons the place became such a popular spot is the fact they also were a source for Middle Eastern and Indian grocery shoppers.

In its farewell letter to customers, Kalasho said their business expresses its heartfelt gratitude for the “unwavering loyalty” they were shown over the years.

“Your patronage has been the cornerstone of Mitch’s Market, and we are incredibly grateful for every interaction, smile, and purchase made,” the post said. “After much reflection and consideration, we have made the decision to change our direction in business. While this wasn’t an easy choice, we believe it’s the right step forward for our families.

“Please know that this decision does not diminish the immense appreciation we have for each and every one of you. Your loyalty has been the driving force behind our success, and we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have served you and the Brownstown community.”

His post went on to say that despite the fact the business is moving to South Lyon, there is a way to stay connected.

The new market is making subs and having them delivered on Saturdays to the neighboring Sunoco gas station, which took over ownership of the market space.

Anyone looking to make a large catering order can do so and Kalasho said he will make the arrangements to get it to the customer any day of the week.

“Also, if you’re looking to purchase any liquor, beer or wine stop at the Sunoco gas station on Sibley and Racho Road,” he said in his post.

Kalasho said he appreciates all of the support and friendships, and that is what he said he will miss the most.

When asked what prompted the departure, the owner said “a bigger opportunity.”

Some responded in disbelief, one person reposting Kalasho’s post and telling his followers that the rumor is really true — the market is really closed.

Nevertheless, most everyone offered works of kindness and support.

The following comments are a few left by fans of the market to the owners:

• You all have been wonderful neighbors and business owners! I will miss you all! However, my order will be placed for the party sub platter. My best to Zak and gang! Sherry Berecz — Trustee Brownstown Twp.

• I truly enjoyed going to the store in Brownstown. Everyone was always so friendly, helpful and kind. I, for one, will miss stopping in for a slice of the Italian sub. Wishing you much success in South Lyon. I travel near there a lot so you may see me walk in one day.
