Two Section VII high school teams were determined to stay undefeated this spring.
Peru High School baseball was one of those squads that executed that goal. The Nighthawks tallied double-digit runs in a high-scoring affair to win 11-8 against Plattsburgh High School. The Nighthawks are now 11-0 on the season.
The score was tied at 1-1 early on but a six-run frame by the Nighthawks have them a 7-1 lead after the top of the second inning.
Deacon Whitmarsh, Kalib Smith and Gabe Moore picked up some RBI base hits in the first three innings of play which helped Peru build their lead in which they did not relinquish after the second inning.
Nate Baker tried to spark the Plattsburgh offense with a bases-clearing 3-RBI triple in the bottom of the second inning. He'd finish his day at the plate hitting 2-4 with a double, triple, one run, and three RBIs.
Beekmantown High School girls' flag football also remained perfect at 10-0, winning a tight battle against Saranac High School 20-13.
Payton Parliament picked up a pair of touchdowns for Beekmantown's first two scores of the game. She scored on a rushing touchdown in the first half and then a passing touchdown in the second half. That pass was caught by Grace McCasland, who scored after hitting the Saranac defense with a nifty juke move, followed by a spin move leading to her scoring in the end zone.
Lily Brown was a major catalyst for the Saranac defense, snagging a couple of interceptions, which both led to scoring drives. The Spartans first touchdown came in the first half on a passing score from Layla Pellerin to Brenna Ducatte.
Pellerin then launched the ball towards the end zone in the second half, with the ball being tipped by multiple Beekmantown defenders before landing in the mitts of Brown.
With the score tied at 13-13, Parliament led the Eagles all the way down the field with receptions to McCasland, Jillian Hagadorn, and a deep completion to Adalyn Svensdsen. Parliament found Svensdsen again for the go-ahead score with 33 seconds remaining.
Saranac tried one final drive to tie the score, but it was Hagadorn who deflected the final pass attempt, leading to the Beekmantown victory.
