Desert Jewels outshine Ireland

Desert Jewels outshine Ireland

Namibia’s national netball team, the Desert Jewels, produced a commanding performance yesterday, defeating Ireland 57–38 in their fourth match at the ongoing 2025 United Arab Emirates (UAE) Netball Cup.

With three wins and one draw under their belt, the Namibians are now one step closer to booking a place in the tournament’s final. Their final group stage match against the USA, scheduled for today at 11h00, will determine whether they advance or not.

In yesterday’s encounter, the Desert Jewels came out composed in the opening quarter, moving the ball patiently and finding space in the shooting circle with ease. Their discipline paid off, and they ended the first quarter with a solid 17–9 lead.

Ireland responded with more urgency in the second quarter, utilising long passes and attempting shots from distance. However, the Namibians used their physicality and intensity, maintaining control to lead 30–23 at halftime.

The third quarter saw Ireland ramp up their pace, pushing the Namibians to work harder in defence, especially against the goal attack. But the Desert Jewels increased their lead to 42–31 heading into the final stretch. The fourth quarter sealed the deal, with the Namibians displaying determination and focus to close out the match strongly.

Head coach Julene Meyer expressed satisfaction with her team’s performance, noting an improvement from their previous outing against Singapore, which ended in a 49–49 draw. She highlighted the positive impact of a rest day, which gave players time to recover and refocus.

Meyer also praised goal shooter Louise Kausehue for her standout display and acknowledged Ireland’s spirited performance, calling them a “good team” that played an excellent game.
