Cooling options available in Henrico, Chesterfield counties

Henrico and Chesterfield officials are offering different ways to cool off across the county.

HENRICO/CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) -Henrico and Chesterfield officials are offering different ways to cool off across the county.

“It’s hot!” Henrico Co. resident Brandon Townes said. “You never know what one family is dealing with as far as air condition or the ability to cool off themselves or their kids if they want to so I think it’s awesome and I know Henrico County does a great job.”

From government centers, libraries or recreation facilities to spray parks below is a list of places you can go to get out of the heat in Henrico:

Libraries

The following libraries are open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The following libraries are open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The following libraries are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Recreation Facilities

The following facilities are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The following facilities are open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Spray Parks

Open daily from May to September from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“The great part about our facilities, our libraries and rec centers is they are open to the public so you can just walk right in,” Chief of Henrico County Emergency Management and Workplace Safety Rob Rowley said.,

Care For Those Experiencing Homelessness

Henrico County supports two facilities that, among other services, provide temporary sheltering services for those experiencing homelessness:

The Salvation Army Central Virginia Inclement Weather Shelter at 1900 Chamberlayne Avenue opens from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the temperature is predicted to be 92 degrees or higher. Persistent extreme heat or other extreme weather might extend these hours.

The Cooling Center is for adults 18 years and older. Hydration and snacks are provided. Its entrance is at the back of the building, facing Sledd Street and the U.S. Post Office.

This Henrico-supported facility is available by referral only.

In Chesterfield, the county’s public libraries and recreation center are places where people can cool off during extreme heat conditions.

Library Hours

Regular library hours are:

  • Monday - Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: Closed
