Election results: Democrats take control of House, lose key Senate seats

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — President Donald Trump declared the midterm elections a "tremendous success" on Twitter Tuesday night as Republicans were projected hold the majority in the Senate and possibly gain seats, but Democrats are still projected to retake control of the House of Representatives for the first time since 2010. Democrats have also picked up several governorships, but not in Florida, where Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis is projected to win.

STATE-BY-STATE RESULTS

ALABAMA

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey will be elected to a full term, beating Democrat Walt Maddox, The Associated Press projects.

ARIZONA

Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick is projected to win the House race in Arizona's southeastern 2nd District, picking up another seat from Republicans.

ARKANSAS

Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson is projected to win re-election, according to CNN.

CALIFORNIA

Sen. Dianne Feinstein is projected to defeat fellow Democrat Kevin de Leon, maintaining her hold on a seat she has occupied since 1992. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is projected to become the state's new governor, beating Republican John Cox.

COLORADO

Democratic Rep. Jared Polis will become the nation's first openly gay male governor, defeating Republican Walker Stapleton. Democrats also scored a victory in the Denver area, as Jason Crow unseated Republican Rep. Mike Coffman.

CONNECTICUT

The Associated Press is projecting Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy will win re-election.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Mayor Muriel Bowser is projected to be re-elected for a second term, according to The Associated Press.

FLORIDA

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson's campaign has reportedly conceded a loss to Republican former Gov. Rick Scott in a race President Trump campaigned heavily to flip.

Democrats are projected to take the 27th District for the first time in decades, with former Clinton administration and Clinton Foundation official Donna Shalala defeating Republican Maria Elvira Salazar. Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is also projected to defeat Republican incumbent Rep. Carlos Curbelo in the 26th District.

However, Democrat Andrew Gillum has conceded the governors' race to Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis.

GEORGIA

No projections have been made in the state's pivotal governors' race, but Republican nominee and Secretary of State Brian Kemp encountered unexpected difficulties with his own voter card when he went to cast his ballot. With Kemp holding a slim lead late in the night, Democrat Stacey Abrams' campaign pointed to thousands of uncounted absentee ballots that could still force the race into a run-off.

GUAM

The first results of the day came in from Guam, where Democrat Lou Leon Guerrero was elected as the territory's first female governor.

HAWAII

Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono has won a second term, defeating Republican Ron Curtis.

IDAHO

Republican Lt. Gov. Brad Little is projected to win the governor's race, beating Democrat Paulette Jordan.

ILLINOIS

Democrat J.B. Pritzker has unseated Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, according to The Associated Press. Sean Casten is projected to replace Republican Rep. Peter Roskam representing suburban Chicago and Betsey Londrigan will unseat Republican Rep. Rodney Davis. In another Chicago-area district, Democrat Lauren Underwood is projected to defeat Republican Rep. Randy Hultgren.

INDIANA

Republican Mike Braun is projected to defeat incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly, according to ABC News, complicating Democrats’ already-narrow path to a Senate majority. President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, the state's former governor, both campaigned for Braun in the closing days of the race.

Projections have also been made in a number of House races, with Republican Greg Pence set to take over a House seat once held by his brother, Vice President Pence. Republican Reps. Jim Banks and Larry Buchson and Democratic Rep. Andre Carson are projected to win re-election.

IOWA

Democrats are projected to pick up a House seat in southwestern Iowa with Cindy Axne defeating incumbent Rep. David Young, but Republican Kim Reynolds has been elected to a full term as governor, beating Democrat Fred Hubbell.

Rep. Steve King, who has been denounced recently by several fellow Republicans for white nationalist rhetoric, is projected to retain his House seat.

KANSAS

Democrat Laura Kelly is projected to beat Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Native American former MMA fighter Sharice Davids is also projected to pick up a House seat for Democrats in the 3rd District.

KENTUCKY

CNN is projecting Rep. Andy Barr will defeat Democratic challenger Amy McGrath in a race that had been seen as a potential indicator for how deep into red territory Democrats could compete Tuesday.

Republican Reps. Brett Guthrie, James Comer, and Harold Rogers are projected to retain their seats.

MAINE

Democrat Janet Mills is projected to win the race to replace Gov. Paul LePage over Republican Shawn Moody, and incumbent Independent Sen. Angus King will win re-election, defeating Republican Eric Brakey and Democrat Zak Ringelstein.

MARYLAND

Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., is projected to win re-election, according to The Associated Press, as is Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who defeated Democrat Ben Jealous.

MASSACHUSETTS

Democrat Elizabeth Warren is projected to retain her Senate seat in Massachusetts, and Ayanna Pressley is set to become the first black woman elected to Congress from the state. Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is projected to defeat Democrat Jay Gonzalez.

MICHIGAN

The Associated Press is projecting Gretchen Whtimer will take back the governor's seat for Democrats, defeating Republican Bill Schuette. Democrat Rashida Tlaib has become one of the first Muslim women in Congress, along with Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar, who is also projected to win her race.

Democrat Debbie Stabenow is also projected to win her Senate race over Republican John James, securing her fourth term.

MINNESOTA

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar is projected to win re-election, according to CNN. In addition to Omar, Dean Phillips will pick up a seat for Democrats in the 3rd District. Sen. Tina Smith, who replaced Democrat Al Franken earlier this year after he stepped down, also won a special election to keep her seat.

MISSISSIPPI

The Associated Press is projecting Republican Sen. Roger Wicker will defeat Democrat David Baria in his re-election race. Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith will face a run-off with Democrat Mike Epsy for the state's other Senate seat on Nov. 27.

MISSOURI

Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has conceded the Missouri Senate race to Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley, giving the GOP another significant pick-up in the upper chamber.

NEBRASKA

Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts has successfully fended off a challenge from Democrat Bob Krist, according to The Associated Press.

NEW JERSEY

Despite swirling corruption allegations and reports of tightening polls in recent weeks, Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez is projected to win a third term, according to the Associated Press. Democrat Tom Malinowksi has defeated incumbent Rep. Leonard Lance to flip a long-held Republican House seat, and Democrat Jeff Drew is projected to win a 2nd District seat the GOP has held since 1994.

NEW MEXICO

Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich has defeated GOP candidate Mick Rich to win re-election in New Mexico.

NEW YORK

CNN is projecting Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Gov. Andrew Cuomo will be re-elected in New York. Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, is projected to win her race, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. According to CNN, Democrat Max Rose will unseat Republican Daniel Donovan in the 11th District on Staten Island. Democrats Anthony Brindisi and Antonio Delgado are also projected to pick up seats, defeating Rep.s Claudia Tenney and John Faso, respectively.

NORTH DAKOTA

Republican Kevin Cramer has unseated Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, expanding the Republican majority in the chamber.

OHIO

CNN projects Sen. Sherrod Brown, D, will defeat Republican Jim Renacci. In a victory speech on Tuesday night, Brown called his campaign "the blueprint for our nation in 2020." However, Republican Mike DeWine is projected to keep the governor's seat in GOP hands, defeating Democrat Richard Cordray.

OKLAHOMA

Kevin Stitt, GOP candidate, has won the race for governor in Oklahoma, defeating Democrat Drew Edmondson, but Democrat Kendra Horn scored a House pick-up in the 5th District.

OREGON

Democratic Gov. Kate Brown is projected to win re-election over Republican challenger Knute Buehler.

PENNSYLVANIA

Democrats Gov. Tom Wolf and Sen. Bob Casey are projected to win re-election, according to CNN. The network also projects Chrissy Houlahan will pick up the 6th District for Democrats and Susan Wild will pick up the 7th District. Republican Guy Reschenthaler is projected to take the 14th District.

RHODE ISLAND

The Associated Press is projecting Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D, will be re-elected in Rhode Island. Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo is projected to win re-election as well.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, who replaced Nikki Haley when she became United Nations ambassador, has won a full term, defeating Democrat James Smith, according to The Associated Press.

SOUTH DAKOTA

GOP Rep. Kristi Noem is projected to defeat Democrat Billie Sutton to become the state's new governor.

TENNESSEE

Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn is projected to defeat Democrat Phil Bresden in the race to replace retiring Sen. Bob Corker and become the state's first female senator, according to CNN. Republican Bill Lee is also projected to win the governors' race against former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean.

TEXAS

Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke has failed in his unlikely effort to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz, according to CNN. The Associated Press is also projecting Republican Gov. Greg Abbott will be re-elected. Democrats got better news in the Dallas-area 32nd District, where ex-NFL player Colin Allred is projected to defeat Republican Rep. Pete Sessions, and the 7th District, where Lizzie Pannill Fletcher is projected to beat longtime GOP incumbent John Culberson.

UTAH

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has won the race for Senate. He defeats Democrat Jenny Wilson.

VERMONT

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has been projected to win re-election by a wide margin. Democrat Peter Welch has been re-elected as the state's at-large House representative.

VIRGINIA

CNN is projecting Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine will defeat Republican Corey Stewart, but votes are still being counted in several important House races. Democratic women made pick-ups in the House with Jennifer Wexton defeating Rep. Barbara Comstock in the 10th District, Elaine Luria winning in the 2nd District over incumbent Rep. Scott Taylor, and Abigail Spanberger unseating Rep. Dave Brat in the 7th District.

WASHINGTON

Sen. Maria Cantwell has secured re-election in Washington, defeating Republican challenger Susan Hutchison.

WEST VIRGINIA

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin has won re-election over Republican Patrick Morrisey, according to Associated Press projections, despite efforts by President Trump to unseat him.

WISCONSIN

Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D, will retain her seat, according to CNN, defeating Republican challenger Leah Vukmir. With most precincts reporting, the race between Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Democrat Tony Evers was still undecided.

WYOMING

Republican Sen. John Barrasso is projected to win re-election, according to The Associated Press.

With more than a third of the Senate and all 435 House seats up for grabs, plus dozens of governorships, Tuesday’s elections could set a tone for the next two years of American politics and determine how much further President Trump can advance his agenda before he faces a bruising re-election fight in 2020.

Democrats have positioned themselves as the only chance to provide a check on Trump and his administration. Republicans argue Democrats are too extreme and the country’s prosperity rests on keeping the GOP in power.

"In a sense, I am on the ticket," President Trump told a cheering crowd at a rally in Cleveland Monday.

Polls released in the final week of the campaign showed Democrats leading on a generic ballot, but many voters were still undecided in specific House and Senate match-ups. Early exit polls Tuesday showed Trump was a major factor for many voters and 55 percent of respondents disapproved of his performance as president.

According to The Associated Press' VoteCast survey, 26 percent of voters named health care as the most important issue in the election, followed by 23 percent who said immigration and 19 percent who cited the economy.
